Microsoft on Tuesday unveiled Project Solara at its annual Build conference in San Francisco, a chip-to-cloud software platform designed to run artificial intelligence agents on specialized hardware in place of traditional applications. The announcement came after the company gave GeekWire and YouTuber Kevin Stratvert an early look during a behind-the-scenes briefing at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters last week, including demonstrations of two working concept devices.

Project Solara is the work of Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group, an interdisciplinary team that brings together product engineering, research, and the sciences, led by Stevie Bathiche, Microsoft corporate vice president and technical fellow. At Build 2023, Bathiche described three structures for how AI relates to applications: AI beside an app as a helper; AI inside the application as the main input loop, where agents like Researcher and Agent Mode in Microsoft 365 Office have emerged; and AI operating entirely outside any single application, orchestrating across multiple apps, services, and devices, a category that includes OpenClaw, Lobster, and coworker-like agents.
